The Burdekin River drains a catchment comparable in size to England, making it one of Queensland’s most hydrologically significant river systems.
Structures like Clare Weir and other dams along the river are critical assets that support regional water storage and supply. During heavy rainfall, the weir faces high velocity water and an influx of heavy sediment loads, which expose the structure to the risk of scouring.
The Challenge
Sunwater, the company responsible for managing Clare Weir, conducted routine inspections to monitor the condition of the weir and detected early-stage scouring at the toe of the weir that could lead to structural failure. They required an immediate yet sustainable and durable weir scour protection solution.
The Solution
Bluemont Rock Bags™ were the choice as they conformed to many of Sunwater’s requirements. They offered an environmentally responsible solution that could be deployed rapidly. These netted bags of rock are also cost-effective. Their portability was particularly important given the logistical constraints of working at a remote river site.
Installation
The installation team deployed 200 Bluemont Rock Bags™ at the base of Clare Weir via helicopter in a single day. The aerial deployment method allowed the team to position the bags accurately at the weir toe without the need for in-water plant or extended site access. The efficiency of the installation minimised disruption to river operations and reduced overall project duration.
Results
