Project Overview
Water management infrastructure in Australia’s outback faces harsh environmental conditions. The region’s extreme climate and irregular water flows create ongoing challenges for structures like weirs and flumes. These systems generally work well under normal conditions, but heavy rainfall can cause rapid erosion.
Erosion control in hydraulic structures was essential at this site.
The Challenge
At this outback site, progressive soil erosion had brought the flume structure to a critical point. A large section of the supporting perimeter had collapsed, leaving the water management system vulnerable. Left unaddressed, continued water flow would accelerate sediment loss and potentially cause complete structural failure. Acting before the situation worsened further was a clear priority.
The Solution
Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, were selected to protect the flume. The flexible, netted structure adapts to uneven ground easily. They perform reliably in high-flow conditions, making them well suited for this site where water velocity varies seasonally.
Manufactured from recycled materials, they also offer an eco-friendly option for remote infrastructure protection.
Installation
The installation team filled Bluemont Rock Bags™ with locally sourced rock and positioned them around the flume’s perimeter to establish a continuous protective barrier. The goal was to dissipate water flow energy and prevent further erosion of the supporting soil. The flexible design allowed the units to conform to the existing contours of the eroded zone.
Results
