Project Overview
Bonnie Vale Beach is a popular campground site and holiday destination among locals. But it’s frequently exposed to the coastal dynamics typical of the NSW shoreline. Under calm conditions the beach may appear stable, but storm swells and elevated tides can wash away sediment rapidly. The rising impact of climate change worsened the erosion along the shoreline.
A coastal erosion protection measure was essential.
The Challenge
At Bonnie Vale Beach, the constant retreat of the beach had brought the erosion front close enough to the campground and access roads. It demanded immediate intervention. Left unaddressed, continued sediment loss would place both the safety and accessibility of the site in jeopardy. Acting before the situation worsened further was a clear priority.
The Solution
Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, were selected as the suitable solution for protecting Bonnie Vale Beach. The flexible, netted structure of the bags allows them to adapt to the beach terrain easily. Installation
The installation team filled and positioned Bluemont Rock Bags™ along the beachfront to establish a continuous protective barrier between the active surf zone and the campground. The goal was to dissipate wave energy and control erosion on the campground side of the beach and to retain sediment within the foreshore profile throughout the year.
