Coastal Erosion Control at Stockton Beach using Bluemont Rock Bags™

deploying 4T bluemont rock bags™ on stockton beach

Stockton Beach in New South Wales, Australia, is an area that has faced considerable coastal erosion due to extreme storm conditions. In order to mitigate the immediate threat in a highly vulnerable section of coastline, Newcastle City Council decided that it needed an interim solution while they worked on the longer-term solution involving sand nourishment. Bluemont Rock Bags™ were chosen to provide temporary erosion control and help stabilise the shoreline.

Site Context

Stockton Beach is known for its past experiences of erosion due to intense storms and high energy waves, leading to the retreat of some beach sections.

Despite efforts to repair damage caused by erosion, none of the measures proved effective. Sand nourishment was eventually identified as the most suitable long-term solution.

The Challenge

A 200-metre section of coastline at the end of the seawall – between Meredith Street and Mitchell Street – had become particularly vulnerable to erosion. This ‘hotspot’ faced intense wave action, threatening the surrounding infrastructure and public spaces.

As a result, an immediate, temporary solution was critical until the authorities could source the sand for the long-term sand nourishment project.

The Solution

Kyowa Filter Units, also known as Bluemont Rock Bags™ were selected following physical modelling that confirmed their suitability to tackle Stockton Beach erosion.

The open structure of Bluemont Rock Bags™ allows wave energy to dissipate while helping manage sediment movement along the shoreline. This flexible approach provided a practical way to stabilise the affected area while withstanding demanding coastal conditions.

Installation

The Soil Conservation Service built a protective wall along the affected section of shoreline using 1,260 Bluemont Rock Bags™. The completed structure formed a barrier approximately 7.2 metres high, with a total mass exceeding 5,000 tonnes.

The design provided immediate coastal erosion control while still allowing natural sand movement across the beach system.

Results

The completed installation effectively protected the most exposed section of Stockton Beach from storm-driven erosion.

Over time, sand has gradually accumulated around the structure, helping it blend into the natural beach profile while continuing to provide protection during severe weather events. The system offers interim shoreline stabilisation until the implementation of permanent beach nourishment.

Related Applications

Bluemont Rock Bags™ are ideal for projects requiring flexible and durable erosion protection. Typical applications include coastal erosion control, riverbank stabilisation, bridge scour protection and shoreline reinforcement. Their permeable structure allows hydraulic energy to dissipate while maintaining stability in dynamic water environments.
