Bridge Scour Protection at the Pilbara Rail Bridge using Bluemont Rock Bags™

The rail road bridge located near mine sites in Western Australia’s Pilbara region was at risk of scour around its bridge piles. The resource company responsible for the structure recognised the threat and took preventive action by installing Bluemont Rock Bags™ around the affected piles. It helped protect critical transport infrastructure serving the region’s mining operations.

Project Overview

The Pilbara is a remote region known for its hot and dry weather conditions. But, it also experiences intense rainfall from time to time. Waterways that may appear calm under normal conditions can quickly become fast-flowing and destructive.

The extreme hydraulic force can affect critical infrastructure like bridges, due to scouring. The Pilbara bridge was one such asset, requiring effective and proactive scour protection

The Challenge

Scour is one of the most serious threats to bridge foundations. The hydraulic forces generated during flood events can erode sediment from around bridge piles, gradually weakening the structural foundation. For a road rail bridge serving active mine sites, any compromise to structural integrity carries significant safety and operational consequences. The resource company identified this risk and sought a reliable bridge scour protection solution before damage could occur.

The Solution

The resource company selected Bluemont Rock Bags™ as the scour protection method for this project. These flexible rope net gabions were ideal for bridge pile applications where placement precision is important. Built from recycled materials, they offer a sustainable solution. The product can be prepared and deployed efficiently, reducing time on site in a remote location.

Installation

Due to the health restrictions at the time, Bluemont conducted user training virtually rather than on site. Despite this, the client carried out the installation process successfully!

Results

Bluemont Rock Bags™ provided effective bridge scour protection around the bridge piles, stabilising the sediment bed and reducing the risk of erosion during intense weather conditions. The resource company achieved their goal in ensuring continued safe operation of the bridge.

Related Applications

Bluemont Rock Bags™, also known as Kyowa Filter Units, are used across a range of civil and infrastructure applications where erosion and scour pose a risk. Common uses include bridge pile and abutment scour protection, riverbank and waterway stabilisation, rail corridor erosion control, coastal and port protection, and level crossing maintenance.
